Civil Air Patrol Cadets Train with Trainer at Vineland’s Planet Fitness

VINELAND— The United States Air Force recently updated its physical fitness program, introducing new assessment standards aimed at promoting long-term readiness and sustainable fitness habits throughout service members’ careers.

In Cumberland County, members of the Civil Air Patrol took proactive steps to prepare for these requirements at the Vineland Planet Fitness location, with guidance from experienced trainer Heidi DeBartolomeis on March 27.

DeBartolomeis, an expert of nearly four decades in strength training and fitness, began her career as a competitive bodybuilder before transitioning to professional wrestling in the 1980s.

Inducted into the Women’s Wrestling Hall of Fame, she later focused on personal training, education, and community advocacy, including work with the Special Olympics and local recreation programs.

At 60, she continues mentoring young athletes and recruits, helping them develop the strength and stamina needed for Air Force physical fitness testing.

The cadets’ training began with a tour of the Vineland Planet Fitness facility, the largest in the United States at over 33,000 square feet across two stories. The gym features a wide array of modern strength and cardio equipment, including flat and incline benches, TRX suspension trainers, plate-loaded machines, landmines, rowing stations, and expansive turf areas, where cadets gained hands-on experience with tire flips, functional strength exercises, and guided circuits designed to simulate the demands of Air Force physical fitness tests.

DeBartolomeis leads group classes for all ages that combine strength, conditioning, and functional movement techniques, ensuring participants learn proper form and safe lifting practices.

For the cadets, joining the Air Force or Civil Air Patrol represents opportunity, stability, and the chance to pursue higher education.

“I wanted a better life and free college, and I see this as a career path,” said cadet Erika Robinson. “I’ve also been in AFJROTC at Vineland High School, so this was a natural next step.”

Jocelyn Kozma echoed similar motivations: “It’s a way to set myself up for the world. I wasn’t doing well in school, so having college paid for through the Air Force was a big draw.”

Other cadets, including Isaac Ortiz and Ja’Khi Williams, cited benefits, career preparation, and family stability as driving factors for joining. One cadet, preparing to become a parent, noted that financial security was a key motivation: “Honestly, it’s for stability. I want to have a solid foundation for my family.”

Senior Air Force recruiter Sergeant Ryan Serback emphasized the value of early preparation.

“These cadets are on track to become part of the world’s greatest Air Force. Having a space like Planet Fitness to train and develop discipline makes a real difference.”

DeBartolomeis emphasized that Planet Fitness supports a wide range of fitness goals for all ages and skill levels. She noted that the gym is affordable and welcoming with continuous equipment upgrades and programs.

“I want everyone to see what Planet Fitness has to offer. Whether it’s youth, seniors, or anyone in between, fitness should be accessible, fun, and empowering.”
